Cranberry Pear Mulled Cider

When the temperatures drop, sometimes a cold drink is the last thing we want to sip on. But a warm cider both sweet and spiced? Yes please. Bonus: this recipe will fill your home with the most delicious scent. Did we mention it’s only 6 ingredients? Easy!

.Ingredients

  • 1 gallon high quality apple cider
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 3 star anise
  • 1 Bosc pear
  • whole cranberries (optional, for garnish)

Method

Add the apple cider, spices* and pear to a large, tall-sided pot. Warm over low heat to just below a simmer. Heat for at least 1 hour before serving. Serve straight out of the pot, ladle into mugs. Garnish with cranberries (optional)

Eggnog – Without the Alcohol

Controversial opinion: I love eggnog. I know the store-bought versions have developed a reputation for tons of sugar, the heaviest of creams, and a concoction of chemicals to mimic spice flavors, but this homemade one? With nutty holiday spices mulled together with condensed milk and cream over a warm stove? With a full body taste that strangely comforting and nostalgic even thought it is no one’s holiday tradition that I know of?  Worth a try (and a lactaid pill). Just do it. Heck, call it a meal. It’s the holidays.

.Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk
  • 5 whole cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup sweetened, condensed milk
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 tsp ground nutmeg, plus more for garnish
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Method

Combine milk, cloves, cinnamon and condensed milk over low heat in a deep sauce pan until the mixture is no longer chilled and is heated through. Slowly increase the heat to medium and bring the mixture to a low boil, careful not to allow a rolling boil. In a medium bowl, combine the eggs and sugar. Beat eggs until lightened in color and fluffy. Slowly temper the eggs by adding about 1 tbsp. at a time of the hot milk mixture into the egg and sugar mixture. Once enough of the milk is in the egg mixture, pour it all back into the saucepan. Heat over medium heat for 3-5 minutes, stirring frequently, until thickened enough to leave a clean line on the back of a spoon. Add the heavy whipping cream, nutmeg and vanilla extract to the mixture and heat through. Do not bring to a boil. Strain the mixture using a fine mesh strainer to catch the spices. Place in an airtight container in the refrigerator and let cool for at least one hour, preferably longer. Serve cold. Garnish with additional nutmeg if desired.  holiday mocktail recipes

Honorable Mention: Athletic Brewing NA Beer

No recipe here, just a great recommendation. If mocktails and alcohol aren’t your thing (or you just need a break), Athletic Brewing has changed the game when it comes to brewing non-alcoholic beer. From Hazy IPAs to golden ales to an “Extra Dark” stout flavor, these will satisfy your quench for a “cold one” to sip on without the side effects – or the flatness that can come with NA beers. Happy holidays, indeed.

north pole nog spiced eggnog in glass with cinnamon stick

North Pole Nog

Yeah, no one feels like making homemade eggnog. Especially in 2020 (unless it’s the next sourdough trend, and if that’s the case, then how far have we fallen?) Anyway, combining spiced rum and bourbon adds a wonderful depth to this eggnog akin to a warm hug. Choose your favorite ‘nog – this list can help – and get spikin’. You can easily triple (or more) the recipe and serve in a glass pitcher. Bonus: there are great egg- and dairy-free eggnog options, too, so all the more reason to drink more?

.Ingredients

  • 6 oz eggnog
  • 1 oz spiced rum
  • 2 oz bourbon
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon, for garnish
  • Cinnamon stick, for garnish

Method

Add spiced rum and bourbon to eggnog and stir to combine. Sprinkle with cinnamon. Top with cinnamon stick, for garnish

swedish glogg mulled wine glass

Swedish Glögg

Glögg is a Swedish spiced mulled wine with a little more oomph than your usual ho-hum forgotten-ten-dollar-wine-you-threw-on-the-stove-and-hoped-for-the-best. In Sweden, glögg is served at every meal in December and signifies the start of the holiday season. The number of ingredients makes this look a little more complicated than it is; once on the stove, this glögg will fill your home with the scent of the holidays.

.Ingredients

  • 2 cinnamon sticks, broken into pieces
  • 1 tsp. cardamom pods
  • 1 small piece ginger, peeled
  • Zest of orange
  • 6 whole cloves
  • cup vodka
  • 1 750-ml bottle dry red wine
  • 1 cup ruby port or Madeira
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. vanilla sugar
  • blanched whole almonds
  • cup dark raisins

Method

  • Crush cinnamon and cardamom in a mortar and pestle (or put them on a cutting board and crush with the bottom of a heavy pot.) Transfer to a small glass jar and add ginger, orange zest, cloves, and vodka. Let sit 1 day.
  • Strain vodka through a fine-mesh sieve into a large saucepan; discard spices. Add wine, port, granulated sugar, vanilla sugar, almonds, and raisins and heat over medium just until bubbles start to form around the edges.
  • Ladle glögg into mugs, with a few almonds and raisins in each one. Keep any remaining glögg warm over very low heat until ready to serve (do not let it boil).

Veterans Day: Celebration Sales & Military Discounts

Veterans Day: Celebration Sales & Military Discounts

This year’s Veterans Day is Friday, November 11, 2022. The legal holiday is dedicated to American veterans of all wars. The weekend is often a celebratory and honorary event, but it’s also a chance for brands to offer promotions and discounts in celebration. Here’s what to know.

Veterans & Active Military Discounts

Veterans and active military members are most drawn to brands that offer specific discounts catered to them. They’ll be more likely to purchase from a brand offering a specific discount and will be more loyal to that brand going forward.

Our recommendation: Work with [b]+studio to include Veteran’s Day and military promotions in your creative assets. Promotions consistently see the highest engagement in creative assets. Maximize Bidtellect’s first-to-market context demographics targeting to skew supply towards target demographic characteristics.

of military members said they would shop at a brand more often when given a personalized offer (SheerID)

Veterans Day is a Big Retail Sale Weekend

Veteran’s Day is another chance for general retail sales and promotions. Reach consumers already shopping and researching online – trends show consumers are preferring online shopping or at least researching online versus in-store.

Our recommendation: Many sites will compile lists of upcoming veterans’ discounts along with general Veteran’s Day sales across verticals. Utilize Bidtellect’s contextual targeting technology combined with predictive audiences to reach target consumers researching relevant veterans’ and sale content. Utilize keywords to find sites with these keywords and phrases.

On average, respondents estimated that 58% of their total apparel spending over the previous 12 months took place via online channels (eMarketer, 2022)
